Climate Change to Blame for Hurricane Maria’s Extreme Rainfall
A storm of Maria’s magnitude is nearly five times more likely to form now than during the 1950s, an increase due largely to the effects of human-induced warming, according to a study led by Dr. David Keellings, assistant professor of geography.

Researchers Uncover Critical Insights into Bacterial Immune Systems
Dr. Asma Hatoum-Aslan, UA assistant professor of biological sciences, and one of her graduate students, Lucy Chou-Zheng, discovered how a common skin bacteria wards off viruses by leveraging cellular processes normally not considered part of any immune system.

Research Shows Cocaine Trafficking Adapts to Law Enforcement Efforts
A model developed by Dr. Nicholas Magliocca from UA and others from around the country found the cat-and-mouse game of cocaine smuggling and government interdiction strategies results in a larger geographic area for trafficking with little success in stopping the drug from reaching the United States.
