Jeffrey A. Levitetz, of Boca Raton, Fla., has given $10,000 to the College to create the Levitetz Scholars Program, which will award scholarships to students in New College. Levitetz, a New College alumnus, is the founder and chair of Purity Wholesale Grocers, one of the largest private companies in Florida. Memorial Fund Honors Cherished Faculty Member

A memorial fund has been established in honor of Dr. Karen Steckol, a professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders who died in November 2011 after a three-year struggle with cancer. Joan Mackey McCollough, of Winter Haven, Fla., has given $25,000 to the College to establish the Jasper O. McCollough Jr., MD, Memorial Endowed Scholarship to honor the memory of her husband. Hugheys Donate $100,000 to David Thomas Hughey Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Dr. James F. and Mrs. Geraldine F. Hughey of Tuscaloosa have added $100,000 to the David Thomas Hughey Memorial Scholarship Fund. They established the fund in 1992 to honor the memory of their son David Thomas Hughey, who was a 1990 graduate of New College in the College of Arts and Sciences. The endowment is used annually to fund a scholarship for a full-time student who is pursuing a degree in the School of Music.

James Cummings Honors Father with Chemistry Scholarship

Dr. James M. Cummings, of Saint Louis, Mo., has given more than $20,000 to the College to establish the James Morgan Cummings Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship to honor the memory of his father. Dr. Cummings graduated from The University of Alabama in 1978; he currently serves as a faculty physician in the Department of Surgery at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. The endowment will fund scholarships for full-time undergraduate students pursuing a degree in chemistry.

Carnaggios Establish Premed Scholarship

Dr. and Mrs. Vincent Carnaggio, of Birmingham, have established the Vincent and Jean Carnaggio Endowed Scholarship with a gift of more than $20,000. The scholarship will support undergraduate students enrolled in UA’s premedical program. After serving in World War II, Dr. Carnaggio attended The University of Alabama, where he received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1950. Foundation Honors Beloved Trustee with Million Dollar Band Scholarship

The J. L. Bedsole Foundation has given $25,000 to establish the T. Massey Bedsole Sr. Endowed Scholarship for the Million Dollar Band, which is part of the College of Arts and Sciences University Bands Program in the School of Music. The children of Dr. Alston Callahan, one of the founders of the Callahan Eye Foundation in Birmingham, and Mrs. Eivor Holst Callahan, a 1948 UA alumnus, have donated artwork to the permanent collection of the Department of Art and Art History. The work is a plaster cast of Lovers (Mithuna), a sculpture from the 11th century done in the Khajuraho style of India. Anthropology Creates Fund for Field Schools

The Department of Anthropology has used donations from supporters to establish the Anthropology Field School Gift Fund, which will be used to support archeological fieldwork. Each year the department offers two or three field schools to give students experience in excavating and other archeological techniques. The fund will pay for equipment and travel expenses associated with these schools, which are essential for students planning a career in archeology.
