Charlotte Olson, a junior dance major from Jasper, Ind., wrote the winning entry in this fall’s “Class with the Dean” social media contest, which asked students to tell the dean about their favorite class in the College of Arts and Sciences. Researchers Publish on Recent Neutrino Observation

Department of Physics and Astronomy researchers were part of the exciting recent announcement of the scientific observation of 28 very high-energy particle events. These events were the first solid evidence for astrophysical neutrinos which were captured with cosmic accelerators at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a particle detector buried in the Antarctic ice. Mancini Earns Top Geology Award

Dr. Ernest A. Mancini, professor emeritus in the Department of Geological Sciences and retired UA Distinguished Research Professor, was named the 2014 recipient of the Sidney Powers Memorial Award by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. The association will recognize Mancini at the opening session of the April 2014 AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition in Houston. Biology Students Give Back to Toy Drive

More than 300 students in biology classes taught by Drs. Rosianna Gray and Kim Lackey did more than learn about science this semester, they also learned how to give back to children in need. As a result of a combined class toy drive, over 2,500 toys were donated to the Daughters of Isis, the female counterpart to the Prince Hall Shriners, as part of their annual holiday toy drive. Two College professors are among The University of Alabama National Alumni Association’s Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award recipients, the University’s highest honor for excellence in teaching. Sarah Barry, associate professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance, and Dr. James McNaughton, assistant professor in the Department of English, are two of the 2013 recipients.
