Paul R. Jones Lecture Series: Norm & Carnetta Davis

February 29 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Norm and Carnetta Davis, important collectors of African American art, will talk about their collection and collecting in a lecture titled “Artistic Sojourns: Our Quest for Knowledge and Understanding of Black Art in America and Beyond,” on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. in the Camellia Room, 2nd floor, Gorgas Library on UA campus.

Over many years, Norm and Carnetta Davis have amassed one of the most impressive private collections of African American art in the southeastern United States.  The Davises’ collection ranges from turn-of-the-20th-century artists such as Henry Ossawa Tanner, William Edouard Scott and Isaac Hathaway to mid-20th-century masters Beauford Delaney, Charles Alston, Norman Lewis and Richard Mayhew, to contemporary luminaries that include Whitfield Lovell, Kara Walker and the late Radcliffe Bailey, among many others. The Davises will share stories related to their acquisition of selected pieces from their collection.

Professor Stacy Morgan, American studies, and organizer of the lecture, said, “This will be a valuable opportunity to learn more about several notable African American artists, interact directly with esteemed collectors and gain insights into the all-too-often opaque realm of art collecting. There also will be time for questions and answers following their presentation.”

The Paul Jones Lecture Series is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and the UA Department of American Studies.

In conjunction with the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art and Museum, the Paul R. Jones Lecture Series is designed to bring to campus artists whose work is part of the Jones Collection and leading scholars and collectors in the field of American art. The Paul R. Jones Museum and Collection honors Mr. Jones’ vision of art, community and continuous learning by hosting lecture series, concerts, workshops, and theatrical performances and is also a classroom for the arts, where students from kindergarten to college experience learning in a new and exciting environment.
