The University of Alabama offers several opportunities to observe and enjoy art, ranging from student-curated exhibitions to public sculptures. Here’s where you can find art on campus and in the community.
Paul R. Jones Museum
The Paul R. Jones Museum, located in downtown Tuscaloosa, presents year-round exhibitions of works from the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art and guest exhibitions. The Paul R. Jones Collection includes one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of 20th-century African American art in the world, donated to the College by Paul Raymond Jones.
Sarah Moody Gallery of Art
The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, located in Garland Hall and supported by the Department of Art and Art History, presents a year-round schedule of changing exhibitions devoted to contemporary art. Exhibitions often present works from the Permanent Collection, which includes paintings, photography, small sculptures and more.
Sella-Granata Art Gallery
Found on the first floor of Woods Hall and supported by the Department of Art and Art History, this gallery was created in 1998 for student exhibitions. In 2009, the UA Board of Trustees approved the name change to “Sella-Granata Art Gallery” to honor two long-time UA art professors. The gallery’s mission was expanded to include general programming by artists and curators from across the nation.
The University of Alabama Gallery
Managed by the College of Arts & Sciences at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center in downtown Tuscaloosa, the UA Gallery showcases exhibits of artistic works, artifacts, textiles and more from permanent collections held by the University and created by faculty, students, and guest artists and designers.
Woods Quad Sculpture Garden
Within the quadrangle between Clark Hall and Woods Hall, the Woods Quad Sculpture Garden began in the early 1990s with sculptures from three Alabama Biennial exhibitions, but it was officially dedicated by the College of Arts & Sciences in August 2014. The sculpture garden is always growing and changing; stop by Woods Quad to see which sculptures are currently residing there, including an iron and steel robot.
UA’s Public Sculpture
The University of Alabama has a large and growing collection of outdoor, public sculptures. Begun in the early 1990s with the Alabama Biennial exhibition, the most recent additions have been in the Woods Quad Sculpture Garden. Life-size bronze statues of our championship coaches, as well as fairy tale animal sculptures are part of our campus-wide treasure trove.
