University of Alabama extending spring break for students, transitioning online: WVUA – March 12
The University of Alabama has announced it is extending spring break for students and transitioning to online learning after the break. Students were scheduled to return March 23, but now classes will not resume until March 30 so faculty and staff can adjust their classes to a remote learning environment.

Play readings postponed: Tuscaloosa News – March 12
The planned reading of one-act plays, scheduled for tonight, Thursday March 12, at Monarch Espresso Bar, has been postponed. The event, created by The University of Alabama’s Pure Products Reading and Lecture Series, was to have featured actors performing two one-act plays, “Freedom” by UA graduate student Christian Tripp, and “Intergalactic Lunch,” by UA English instructor Chris Love. A Facebook post on the reading’s event read: “In light of the University’s most recent decision: ‘All non-essential University meetings, gatherings and events are canceled,’ we are going to postpone tonight’s Pure Products Drama Night until we are confident it is safe to gather for a reading.
Huxford Symphony Orchestra
UA concert can be streamed: Tuscaloosa News – March 12
Tonight’s Huxford Symphony Orchestra concert will be played tonight, Thursday March 12, to a closed house with no audience, due to coronavirus concerns, but the performance can be seen and heard via livestream, by searching “The University of Alabama: Moody School of Music” channel on Youtube, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Huxford is the student symphony of the UA School of Music. This afternoon, UA moved to cancel all “non-essential” gatherings.

Students launch fee-free shopping service to help senior citizens get food, prescriptions: NBC (Chicago) – March 22
It all started with a simple conversation, but now a group of undergraduate students are aiming to provide fee-free grocery and pharmacy shopping for vulnerable populations during the coronavirus pandemic. University of Alabama student Michael Arundel’s classes at the school were halted because of the pandemic, and he returned to his family’s home in suburban Orland Park. When the state of Illinois issued a “stay-at-home” order, Arundel jumped into action.
