Music Professor Awarded Grant for Jazz Ensemble

Dr. Andrew Raffo Dewar, an assistant professor in the School of Music and New College, was awarded a New Jazz Works Commissioning and Ensemble Development Grant from Chamber Music America in the amount of $20,500. He was among 10 composers and ensembles selected for awards from a pool of 167 applicants by independent review panels of musicians and presenters. Horn Students Set a Record While Sweeping International Horn Contest

Five students from the School of Music’s French horn studio made history by sweeping all four competitions at the recent Southeast Horn Workshop, which is a regional workshop of the International Horn Society. Two College Biology Students Selected for Hudson Alpha Internships

Two College students are doing more than imagining what a career in biotechnology is like. Through the BioTran internship program at the Hudson Alpha Institute based in Huntsville, Ala., Ben Henderson and Abigail Shelton are gaining real world experiences while enhancing their education. Anthropology Student Wins Boren Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State

Lauren Marsh, a senior in the Department of Anthropology, was awarded a prestigious Boren Scholarship, given by the U.S. Department of State to provide college students with resources and encouragement to acquire language skills and experience in countries critical to U.S. security. Geological Sciences Professor Wins NSF CAREER Award

Dr. Samantha Hansen, an assistant professor in the Department of Geological Sciences, was awarded a $715,000 CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation to study a new approach to investigating the seismic velocity structure beneath Antarctica. These awards are NSF’s most prestigious recognition of top-performing young scientists beginning their careers.
