Tickets go on sale Wednesday for the 2018 Realizing the Dream events in Tuscaloosa, which will feature Gospel recording duo Mary Mary and actor, producer and humanitarian Danny Glover … The events are hosted by The University of Alabama, Stillman College, Shelton State Community College and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) will honor trailblazing tenor and educator George Shirley and visionary leader and academic Earl Lewis, President of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation,at the 40th annual Classical Roots Celebration, March 2-3, 2018 … Joshua Williams is a rising star among a new generation of horn artists, most recently winning First Prize in the professional division of the 2017 International Horn Competition of America. A native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, he is currently in the final stages of completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at The University of Alabama, where his primary teacher is Charles ‘Skip’ Snead.

Cancer and the Environment

Research finds connections between cancer victims in FruithurstCBS 42 (Birmingham) – Jan. 5

Eight people including four children in the Fruithurst community in Cleburn County were diagnosed with cancer, and the community believed the cases were related. Now, researchers have found something. With the help of a rural sociologist and a geochemist at Auburn University and a geological scientist at the University of Alabama, Christy Hiett, the principal of Fruithurst Elementary School, and a host of volunteers tested 26 water samples and 16 soil samples. In the process, they discovered connections between the cancer cases and the environment.
