Sculptures Raise $46,000 for Hospital
From the December 2014 edition of Desktop News | Three students and a professor in the Department of Art and Art History recently designed and created sculptures that were auctioned off by Nucor Steel to raise money for Children’s of Alabama, a pediatric hospital located in Birmingham. Merkles Contribute Nearly $60,000 for Art Scholarships
Drs. Carol and Arthur Merkle of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. have contributed nearly $60,000 to establish The Carol B. Merkle Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarships in the Department of Art and Art History. Nearly half of the Merkle’s gift was also matched in 2009 as part of a challenge grant by the Windgate Charitable Foundation that pledged to give an equal amount up to $500,000 for studio arts scholarships. Art Support Fund Established by Jack Drake
Russell J. “Jack” Drake of Birmingham has contributed $10,000 to establish The Russell J. Drake Endowed Support Fund, which will be used to support operating expenses in the Department of Art and Art History. Drake is a 1969 graduate of The University of Alabama School of Law. He serves on both the Paul Jones Advisory Board and the Leadership Board in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Rutledge Contributes More Than $18,000 to Painting Scholarship in Honor of Parents
Jerry Otwell Rutledge of West Hollywood, Calif. has contributed more than $18,500 to the Vernon and Eugenia Rutledge Endowed Painting Scholarship. The scholarship, established in 2009 to honor his parents, provides scholarships to students majoring in studio art with a concentration in painting in the Department of Art and Art History.
