Couple Gives $25,000 for Veterans Scholarship

From the June 2017 Desktop News | Dr. Matthew Therrell, an associate professor of geography, and his wife Meganne Warner recently gave more than $25,000 to the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama in order to honor the memory of Warner’s father, H. William Warner III, and enhance the educational opportunities of students who are veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

The gift will fund the H. William Warner III Veterans Scholarship in the College of Arts and Sciences.

“My father valued education and the arts,” Warner said. “He was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War and was incredibly proud of his service and relationships with other veterans.  A scholarship seemed like an obvious way to honor my father and his values, support our vets through education, and contribute to UA so it can continue to positively affect generations to come.”

H. William Warner III, in whose name the scholarship was given, was born December 22, 1941 in Springfield, Connecticut. He became a member of the Company First Battalion, Eleventh Infantry in March 1968. After serving as a Second Platoon Leader of Charlie 26, he became the Company Executive Officer of Charlie 5.

During his service he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

He passed away September 15, 2016, and was buried in the Arlington National Cemetery.

“We like the fact that it is a living memorial,” Therrell said. “There are thousands of veterans, and/or their dependents, on campus, and I hope that we can help them even in this small way because even a small amount can sometimes be very meaningful to these students.”
