UA to Launch Inaugural Crowdfunding Campaign

From the November 2017 Desktop News | Saturdays at the Capstone would not be the same without the show-stopping performance and enthusiastic energy that exudes from Bryant-Denny Stadium when the Million Dollar Band takes the field. Now the 400-member organization that provides the rhythm of the game hopes to enhance its sound with the help of a new digital philanthropy tool.

On November 17, the University will launch UA Crowdfunding—an online fundraising platform used to generate support for the Capstone by connecting the power of social media, peer-to-peer relationships, and collective giving. The platform will eventually allow donors the opportunity to support a variety of different projects created by those within the UA community. Supporters can make gifts of any size and track the overall progress of projects, which will typically run for 30 days.

The inaugural campaign will aim to raise $40,000 to fund an entire section of new instruments for the Million Dollar Band.

“Unlike most college bands, the Million Dollar Band does not have a matching set of instruments. A successful campaign will enable us to improve our sound, enhance our image and replace aging instruments,” said Dr. Kenneth Ozzello, UA’s director of bands.

Managed by the Office of Annual Giving, UA Crowdfunding will build support for projects that might otherwise go without funding. Beginning in Spring 2018, campaigns will be created and run by academic departments, student groups and other members of the UA community in need of support.

“It’s amazing what can be accomplished with a large number of small donations. Our theme ‘Great ideas. Legendary Impact.’ encompasses that spirit. We are excited to debut this new way of supporting the University and know our alumni and friends will respond by helping fund the Million Dollar Band,” said Mary Lawhorn, UA’s director of annual giving.
